Glasgow S1/S2 Tournament Success
A combined squad of s1/s2 rugby players from Oban, Mull, Mid-Argyll made the early start to journey to Cartha Queens Park for the annual Glasgow S1/S2 Rugby Tournament. The Argyll squad arrived just in time for a quick warm up and then into their first game against Ardrossan. It might have been the early start or stiffness in the legs due to the journey but Ardrossan scored first, from a tapped penalty the scrum half flicked the ball out through the backs and allowed the winger to touch down in the corner. This setback might have caused the heads to go down but the Argyll forwards started to win ball and were feeding their backs with the possession needed to cause a major threat. In the fifteenth minute, from a loose ball Fergus mcgowan picked up made a break he was halted but support came from Ewen McGlynn ably assisted by Fergus Bradbury. The ball was popped out to scrum half Alex Campbell and along the line to Craig Carey, who dipped the shoulder and dropped a gear diving over the line to score his first try.

This seemed to rock Ardrossan back on their heels and it was only two minutes later that Craig ran in another try. Argyll were now camped in the Ardrossan twenty two but could not convert this into points on the board. The game ended two scores to one for Argyll.

Argyll in the second game against a bigger and beefier Garnock side were now flying and had got all the kinks out of the system. The Argyll forwards were rampant and were winning good ball on their own put-in and against the head. The backs had quality ball to experiment with and what a performance they turned in, that man Carey cropping up again scoring five tries. Garnock were having problems containing Argyll and this allowed Neil Morrison to chip in with two tries, he also was running like a man possessed. Garnock managed to come back with a couple of scores but this was down to silly niggly wee mistakes made by Argyll. Final Score in the second game Argyll won seven scores to two.

In the third game Argyll were drawn against Dumfries, who brought a couple of antipodean coaches with them. This did not thwart the raw enthusiasm of Argyll and they carried on from their last game. The forwards creating chance after chance for the backs and the backs duly obliged. Craig Carey turning in another cracking performance with four tries two running from his own twenty two beating four and five men a time to touch down, Neil Morrison jinking and ducking tackles on the wing chipping in with another two tries bringing his total for the day to four. Dumfries managed to cross the line once from a tap penalty . Final score third game Argyll won six scores to one.

The last game of the group was against Kilmarnock, who from the start were bigger, stronger and better organised than Argyll. Kilmarnock playing some lovely Rugby ran in four tries, Argyll failed to score this was down to mainly the exertions of the previous games and some changes that had to be made to the side due to injury.

The icing on the cake for Argyll try scoring hero Craig Carey, was that he was awarded one of the “men of the tournament” awards from members of the Glasgow Warriors. Argyll were runners up but left Glasgow with the satisfaction that even with a side flung together on the day they can compete with bigger clubs with more resources mainly due to the efforts of their coaches Murray Hamilton and Ben Radford from Oban and Duncan “Brochan” Aitken from Mid-Argyll.
