11/5/2010 Youth Report Oban v Kelso & East Kilbride
After a smashing day of Rugby at the Oban Lorne Sevens Tournament on the Saturday, it was the turn of the young guns on the Sunday to show off their skills.
An under 15 squad, made up of representatives from Oban and Mull took to pitch one against East Kilbride, who had taken in Oban on their Rugby Tour. On Pitch two Oban, augmented with Mull and Mid-Argyll took part in round-robin tournament with a junior East Kilbride team and Kelso. The under 15 game was evenly matched for most of the first half with Argyll scoring through Magnus Bradbury and Craig Carey. East Kilbride however did not lie down and with some robust forward play managed to put two tries on the board.
For the neutral it was a great game of rugby to watch no quarter asked or given. It was then unfortunate that two of the East Kilbride players had to leave the field, one with a twisted ankle and the other with a dislocated shoulder. Worse was to come as one of the East Kilbride forwards got an accidental bang on the head and had to be taken to Lorne and the Islands Hospital. Some fast changes in the East Kilbride ranks had to be made and the disruption meant that Argyll now had the advantage and pressed this home with further tries from Magnus Bradbury.
The junior side gave a good account of themselves and narrowly lost to Kelso and East Kilbride but some of youngsters showed a great deal of promise. Again it was unfortunate that Oban’s Freddie Baker got a bang on the head and was taken to the Lorn and the Islands Hospital just as a precaution . At the end of play all adjourned to the club house to sample “Pasta a la Bradbury”. There was a good atmosphere in the club house and all of the players mingled and had a good crack all in the spirit of the game.
George Hamilton on behalf of Oban thanked both Kelso and East Kilbride for travelling to take part and for making the day an enjoyable feast of rugby. Charliie Robertson, ex Oban High replied for Kelso and with the Kelso Captain made presentations of badges and brochures to the Captain of the Under15 team Magnus Bradbury and the Junior side Gregor Brydon. Charile was responsible in the “old days” of starting many a rugby career in Oban and it was great to have him back in Oban. East Kilbride presented Oban with a Quaich to be put on display in the Rugby Club.
A good day was had by all new friendships made and hopefully the boys that were injured will get well soon, especially young Freddie A big thank you must go to Billy Thompson, to the coaches George, Gerry and Ben, to the refs who had a hard day on Saturday but got the legs going for the Sunday as well. To “Elle Presidente’” Dee for the food and refreshments.
As Charlie said “All teams took part, but Rugby Won.”
