15/9/2009 Oban Squeeze Home against Cumnock 12-8
Oban Lorne 12-8 Cumnock
Oban returned to Glencruitten last saturday for their first West League Division 1 fixture of the season with Cumnock the visitors. Oban who fell to a 22-11 loss to Wigtownshire in the first round of fixtures this season fielded almost half a different team from the previous weekend, including 6 changes to the backline. Both teams made a subdued and scrappy start to the game most probable due to the severe weather conditions. Oban however were given a chance to go ahead with a penalty within the first few minutes this was missed by Oban kicker McEwen and the score remained 0-0. The young Cumnock side took confidence from this and scored a well worked try set up with a chip from their no10 and resulted in a lucky bounce into the arms of the Cumnock winger who dived over to score the first try of the game. Oban eventually found their way after this and after and set up wave after wave of attack on the Cumnock try line. Their hard work eventually paid off with a try from close range by Robin MacQueen, his second of the season to level the score at 5 all. Both teams improved late on in the second half however it was Cumnock who again took the advantage, slotting over a penalty form close range giving them a half time lead of 8-5. Oban with the wind behind them continued to improve in the second half. Obans game developed into good attacking rugby and created several scoring opportunities. This eventually paid off and resulted in a score from a driving maul from the home team which was converted to give a 12-8 advantage to Oban. The men in green continued to dominate for a period after this with more promising runs from the middle of the pitch but failed to pass before the defence got back . Despite this Oban did not have the cutting edge to further their advantage and were made to work in the final phases of play by a Cumnock side giving their all to score a last gasp try. Oban held on and were awarded with their first win of the 2009/10 season.
