Oban Lorne League Rugby Round Up
Oban Lorne have made an average start to their 2009/10 West Division 1 Season.
The opening weekend saw an under strength and depleted side travel to Stranraer to face Wigtownshire. Unfortunately it was a bad start to the season for the men in green who despite leading at half time came away with a disappointing 22-11 away loss.
Oban’s fortunes changed however the following weekend. A much stronger squad available for coach Corrie Louw to choose from which resulted in a hard fought 12-8 win for Oban which could so easily have been more if the side had been more clinical with their chances. However it was points on the board for the first time this season and a confidence boost ahead of the next game.
Last weekend Oban travelled to Fintry to play Strathendrick again with many changes to the squad.
Oban made an encouraging start to this game and led 7-0 within the first 10 minutes. However this was short lived and two easy scores were given away in the first half an resulted in a 17-7 lead for Starthendrick. Oban did come back into the game with a try form veteran Robert Wright but this was not enough and Strathendrick ran out comfortable 27-12 winners. Lack of first phase ball from scrum and lineouts did not help the cause as did the lack of front row replacements. If Oban Lorne are to challenge in a very open league this season then they need more commitment from the playing squad to travel away from home with a decent squad. With the majority of league matches being played by December the player’s response will have to be immediate or the team’s chance will have been lost for this season.
With 3 weeks of the season gone Oban are sitting in mid table and will be looking to take points from their next game at home to newly promoted Paisley next weekend. KO - 3PM , Saturday at Glencruitten.
