18/10/2009 Spirited Oban Lose Against Millbrae
SHE West Division 1 Millbrae 48-12 Oban Lorne
As has been the case too often this season, Oban travelled with a much depleted squad of only 14 players to face league newcomers Millbrae at the home of the current Scottish Premier 1 Champions Ayr RFC. Their was a return to the team for hooker Del Robertson, Jamie MacMillan in the second row, Allan Wright on the wing and a first start for Calum Thomson. Despite being a man down Oban made a purposeful start to the game and were maintaining pressure on the hosts inside their own half. However the man advantage quickly took its toll on Oban and a break and chip over by the home team resulted in a try in the right hand corner. Oban were not disheartened by this and quickly found themselves back inside the Millbrae half. Oban at this stage were playing good free flowing rugby and were rewarded for their good work by a try from Allan Wright in the corner. This was converted by Euan Wilson which gave Oban an early 7-5 lead. This was short-lived for the men in green when Millbrae again broke through a sloppy Oban defence and retook the lead. This spurred the home side on to score no less than 4 more tries before half time giving a 38-7 lead after 40 minutes. Oban did not let the score line dampen their spirits and started the second half as they did the first. Playing with great teamwork and a style of quick offloading rugby they scored their second try of the afternoon by Bert Wright, which goes into the Oban Lorne record books as the first time a father and son have scored in the same game for Oban Lorne. With a new found confidence the men in green continued to attack and even had the ball held up over the line by Millbrae. After this point the home side made their way up the pitch and continually battered the Oban try line. Oban defended well with a man less during this time however tiredness was evident throughout the Oban team and Millbrae finally broke them down to score two further tries, to give a final score of 48-12. Oban coach Corrie Louw and Captain Garry MacEwan were both very pleased with the teams performance down to the fact they were playing with a man less for the whole game and were also carrying several injuries within the team.
