Oban Stop the Rot With Fine Win Over Strathclyde Police

Strathclyde Police were the visitors to Glencruiten last Saturday with the home side hoping to end a run of three straight defeats in the league.
Coach Corrie Louw had a much larger squad available after last weeks 14 man showing at Millbrae. There was a return for Robin MacQueen in the front row, Andy MacDougall in the back row, Struan Smith and Chris Mac Donald in the backs.
Both sides made a scrappy start to the game with the worsening weather conditions causing problems. Oban however slowly started applying pressure on the visitors and were making several breaks from the middle of the field most notability form the Smith twins and Andy MacDougall. The home side eventually took the lead with a well worked try from MacDougall which was converted to give Oban a 7-0 lead. This try sent confidence through the home team and who immediately after this try reasserted pressure on the Police. The away defence however was hard to break down and Oban also squandered several other scoring opportunities. Oban’s good work eventually paid off and a quick burst of three tries were scored in succession from Robert Wright and one apiece from the Smith twins giving a 26-0 lead. Strathclyde Police failed to let this dampen their spirits and had a great spell of pressure in the Oban 22 at the end of the half. The result of this was after a few missed attempts the away side scored a penalty which gave a 26-3 score at half time.
The second half started well for Oban. The weakening Police defence was again breached this time by Craig McGougan who crossed under the posts to extend the lead. This was followed by another well taken try by Struan Smith which meant Oban had reached 40 points.
Strathclyde Police refused to give up and had another great spell of pressure in the Oban 22. They were however aided by a yellow card given to Oban for a dangerous tackle which allowed them to create an overlap and score their first and only try of the afternoon.
The loss of a score spurred Oban on and another try was scored again by Struan Smith which gave him a hatrick of tries. Oban continued to dominate in the later stages of the game and wasted several other scoring opportunities which could have further extended the final result of 45-8.
This result means that Oban push themselves up to 7th in the table and are a further 5 points clear of the teams in and around the relegation zone.
Next week Oban visit Clydebank again in the league in what will be a very tough match. The team will be hoping to build on this weeks good win before three successive home games in November.
