Oban’s Poor Away Form Continues
Oban’s Poor Away Form Continues

Oban Lorne travelled to Clydebank last Saturday on a high after a convincing home win the previous weekend. Spirits were also high due to the large travelling squad for the game which has been seen so rarely this season.
Only one change was made to the team which started against Strathclyde Police. Struan Smith moved into the back row to take place of twin brother Cameron which allowed Calum Thomson to start on the wing.
Both sides made scrappy and untidy starts to the game, however it was Clydebank who drew first blood. A penalty awarded in front of the posts was kicked successfully and led to an early 3-0 lead. Oban did not let this dampen their spirits and quickly turned the run off play. The men in green were doing well to retain the ball in the Clydebank half but did not capitalise on some early ill discipline from the home team by missing three penalty attempts in front of the posts. Oban paid the price for their missed opportunities as Clydebank capitalised on a passage of awful handling form Oban to score the first try of the afternoon.
Oban got themselves together and played a more direct and sensible style for a period. This was rewarded with a try by Malcom Downie, converted by Euan Wilson to narrow the score to just a point at 8-7.
Obans good fortune did not last for long as Clydebank took advantage of Obans poor line out and scored a further try before the half time mark giving a score of 18-7.
Obans lineout was becoming a huge problem. Clydebank regularly stealing the ball in the Oban lineout and setting up a superb driving maul was the main foundation of their game. Clydebank scored their third try of the afternoon of turnover ball from Oban and used the overlap of numbers to score out wide and to pull further ahead from Oban Lorne.
Oban only seemed to get themselves going into the second half and at points were playing some very good rugby controlled by scrum half Euan Wilson. After a short spell of pressure on the Clydebank line Oban were rewarded with their 2nd try of the afternoon this time by player/coach Corrie Louw which narrowed the gap to 9 points.
This gave Oban a confidence boost and had several other waves of attack on the Clydebank try line, which came to nothing.
Clyde bank still using the lineout as their main weapon scored their bonus point try with ten minutes to go from a driving maul which the Oban forwards could not compete which allowed the home team to go over at close range.
Oban rallied late on but could not create any real scoring chances and left a final score of Clydebank 30, Oban Lorne 14.

Oban now have three consecutive home games over the next few weeks. This starts with Carrick at Glencruitten next Saturday Ko - 2pm
