Scottish Hydro National Bowl Round 1
Oban Out Of Bowl At First Hurdle
Clydebank made the trip west last Saturday with Oban hoping to get one back on their opponents after a 30-14 loss in the league only a few weeks ago. Euan Wilson returned to the team at Scrum Half for this game while there were also starting places for Darrell Williams in the front row, Neil Rimmer and Craig Nicholson also in the pack which allowed Struan Smith to move to the wing. The early kick off time possibly contributed to a slow and scrappy start from both teams, with either side struggling to keep possession and have continuity. First blood fell to the home side who went 3-0 up thanks to a penalty from Robert Wright giving Oban an early lead. This spurned the away side into now holding possession and found themselves on the front foot in the match putting pressure on the Oban line. The visitors did hit back with a penalty try awarded by the referee which was easily converted giving a score of 7-3. The rest of the second half continued as it had started with no team looking like making headway in the game. Oban however improved slightly as the match wore on and were rewarded with a fantastic score by, which included a 360 degree spin and the beating of several of the away defence by David Hunter. This was converted by Wright to edge Oban 10-7 ahead at the break. The second half failed to break into life and continued like the first had started. Oban however took advantage of some poor Clydebank discipline at the ruck and Wright slotted through his second penalty of the day which increased Obans lead to 13-7. Clydebank hit back shortly after with a penalty of their own which left only a 3 point margin in the game with a quarter to go. Both sides were punished by the referee in the closing stages with a yellow card being shown to both teams for persistent indiscipline which left a 14man game for 10minutes. With 5 minutes to go Oban were still leading 13-10 but Clydebank were giving their all in attack to retake the lead. The Oban defence were finally broken down with Clydebank taking advantage of an overlap out wide to score a try which let them retake the lead at 15-13. Oba had several chances to retake the lead in the form of penalties but these were not taken and resulted in a 15-13 win for Clydebank which means Oban are out of the Bowl competition in the first round. Oban are back in league action next Saturday with a home game against Wigtownshire. KO 2pm at Glencruitten, all welcome.
