31/1/2010 Cracking win for Oban at Connel
Scottish Hydro West League 1
Oban Lorne 57-11 Millbrae
Oban Lorne ended a dismal run of results without a win since early November with victory over Millbrae last Saturday. With the game switched to Connel due to the cold weather conditions, Oban Lorne fielded one of their strongest line ups so far this season making several changes from the previous weeks 43-3 defeat away to Cumbernauld. Mark McTighe found himself at Hooker for the day, while Cammy Smith replaced the absent Euan Wilson at Scrum Half. Their were also starts for Robert Wright and Robbie MacDonald as the centre pairing which allowed Chris MacDonald to move to Stand Off and Craig ,McGuigan starting on the wing. Oban started the game well with passages of quik attacking rugby which saw them pressure the Millbrae defence early on. Oban were rewarded with this good start after only 5 minutes with a try from Chris MacDonald, converted by Wright, giving a early 7-0 lead to the home side. This good start continued with a first senior rugby try from winger Ryan Jackson, touching down in the corner giving a 12-0 lead. Millbrae raised their game after this and with the aid of some Oban indiscipline at the breakdown narrowed the lead to 12-3 with a penalty and also came close shortly after with another attempt at goal. The home side however went on to score a further two converted tries in the half from twins Cammy & Struan Smith with the visitors replying with a penalty giving a 26-6 score line at the break, as well as Oban having two tries dissalowed with the decision of a forward pass given in each by the referee. Oban started the second half as they did in the first but were becoming a little complacent with ball in hand. This however did not stop flanker Andy MacDougall scoring two good tries with the score line stretching to 43-6 by the hour mark. Millbrae at this point down to 13men due to injury began to play to their potential and with a period of pressure on the Oban line were rewarded with a consolation try, their last score of the afternoon. Oban did not let this affect their own game and scored a further two tries, one from Andy MacDougall which sealed his hatrick and a second score of the season for second row Jamie MacMillan which gave a final score line of 57-11 to Oban Lorne. As well as ending a poor run of results, this bonus point win lifts Oban into seventh place in the league above Loch Lomond, and 16 points above the relegation zone.
Due to the upcoming RBS 6 Nations championship Oban do not play their next game until the 20th of February away to Strathclyde Police, however attendance at training is expected as ever over this period.
