Great win over Clydebank
Scottish Hydro West Division

Oban Lorne 23-10 Clydebank

Oban Lorne returned to league action at Glencruitten last Saturday with the pitch being in remarkable condition considering the recent snow and hard frost.
Oban coach Corrie Louw made several changes to the side that beat Millbrae at home two weeks ago, there were starts for Robin MacQueen in the pack, while Euan Wilson, Alex Cadzow and Allan Wright found themselves a starting place in the backline.
A scrappy start was made to the game from both sides which did not compliment the bright sunshine and good pitch conditions made for running rugby. Clydebank however took the lead with a penalty after 5 minutes due to Oban indiscipline at the breakdown resulting in an early 3-0 lead. The home side didn’t take long to respond and found themselves level with a penalty taken by Stand off Alex Cadzow who sailed the ball straight through the uprights from just inside the half way line.
Both teams struggled to bring the game to life and struggled to string together any significant phases of play. 20minuites into the first half with Oban in possession in their own 22 the ball was dropped back fro the line out which allowed the Clydebank backs to run through, hack the ball forward, and with the aid of a lucky bounce scored the first try of the game.
Despite this setback Oban started to dominate the game and turned their wealth opposition into pressure on the Clydebank try line, and were eventually rewarded with a simple pushover try from Robin MacQueen. The conversion was narrowly missed giving a score of 8-10 to Clydebank at half time.
The second half started as the first began with scrappy play from both sides and reset after reset in the scrum, which was becoming a problem for the away team. Oban eventually made their pressure tell resulting in a penalty from a scrum which was neatly slotted over by scrum half Euan Wilson giving Oban the lead for the first time at 11-8.
Oban were dealt a blow shortly after this with Stand off Alex Cadzow going off injured which meant a reshuffle on the backs.
The home side took confidence from this good start to the half and scored another try again as a result from poor disipline at the scrum from Clydebank. The penalty was taken quickly only a few metres from the line and Mark McTighe dived over after a couple of phases to give the home side their second try of the afternoon, with Wilson yet again converting.
By now Oban were really asserting themselves on the game and good running from 2nd row pairing Jamie MacMillan and David Hunter kept the visitors under pressure.
Oban spurned several scoring opportunities late on and if they had been more clinical with their chances would have secured a winning bonus point.
There was however a final score in the game, a superb team try, with the ball moving from wide in the Oban half, nearer to the try line where the ball eventually found man of the match David Hunter who burst into a gap and offloaded to the support runners who passed along the line to let right winger Allan Wright in for the try and the last play of the game. The final conversion was missed which resulted in a great 23-10 win for Oban Lorne.
Oban now have 5 games remaining this season and playing like this will soon find themselves climbing up the league table in the latter stage of the season.
Oban are in league action next weekend away to Paisley ko, 3pm, before the club dinner which starts at 7pm in the clubhouse.
